Some random Shortcuts & helpful suggestions...

Information for OS X users... re the Dock, if navigating the cursor to the bottom of your screen for icon selection is beginning to bore you consider positioning it on the right side of your screen, as a vertical display. This will give you more top to bottom open screen for your work. Go to the Apple menu, select Dock, click on Position on Right.

A useful Shortcut to hide or show the Dock, hold down the two keys command option, then press D.

If you keep a lot of icons on your Desktop, to save screen space consider displaying them smaller and as one liners. Be in Finder... go to View menu, select Show View Options, move slider to Small; choose a Text size; see Label position, click Right. Then, to arrange icons neatly in alphabetical order on your Desktop, go to View, select Arrange, select by Name.

If you have difficulty reading the type on your screen because it appears so small, changing the Resolution can make everything larger. Go to Apple menu, click on System Preferences, click on Displays, select a smaller formula, the new image size will display immediately.

If you have purchased your Mac computer within the past couple years, the following info will be useful. When your work is finished, either Shut Down or Sleep. Apple recommends you put computer to Sleep if you plan to use it again within 3 days. If you do not plan to use it in the next 3 days do the Shut Down.

A Shortcut to do this, press/hold control key, then press eject key (upper right corner on the extended keyboard), release keys, dialog appears with 4 buttons... instead of mouse-over and click consider the following keyboard Shortcuts: to put to Sleep press S key; to Shut Down press return key; to Cancel press esc key.

If you experience a crash or freeze, and you are unable to operate the computer, including inability to move the cursor or other problems... push the power button and hold for a count of about five. Screen should go dark, the power will go off, you will hear the spinning hard drive and fan stop. Wait about a minute for computer to rest and reset itself, then do your usual start up by pressing the power button. Things will probably be back to normal.
