Burn a CD-R disc more than one time
If you are a Mac user working in OS 10.2(see SPECIAL NOTE below, you have probably already burned a CD-R disc or two and wished you could burn more than just one session on the disc. As you may know, using a more costly CD-RW disc, with the correct software, does allow you to burn the same disc two or more times until it is full.
Well, the other day, LWMUG member Michael Moore showed up at the Learning Center with information on how to burn a multi-session CD... using a CD-R disc. Although this info has been around for more than a year, he had never done the task and neither had I. A few hours later Michael had accomplished what he set out to do using his iMovie files. I thought it would be worthwhile sharing this method with members who might also be interested.
The path is long and challenging but could be beneficial if you stick with it.
START WITH STEP 1 to burn a new CD-R.
1. insert blank CD-R disc
2. allow a few moments for computer to read disc
3. Untitled CD icon will pop up on Desktop
4. now give disc a title...
(once the disc is burned, the title cannot be changed)
START WITH STEP 5 after disc has had its first burn.
5. go to File menu, select New Folder
6. untitled folder icon will pop up on Desktop
7. give folder a title...
(for instructional purposes we'll call it "MULTI-BURN")
8. drag a File (text, graphic, sound, movie) into this folder
9. open the OS X Applications folder
10. open the Utilities folder
11. double click on Disk Copy icon; small window appears
12. drag MULTI-BURN folder into Disk Copy window
13. Image Folder dialog appears
14. see Save as: (give it a title, such as "Burn No. 1")
15. see Where: (choose Desktop)
16. click on Save button, allow a few moments
17. status bar will appear, showing File being processed
(may get a Warning dialog... if so, click on Ignore)
18. Disk Copy window will appear, saying:
"Image Folder operation completed successfully."
19. go to File menu, select Burn Image
20. Burn Image dialog appears
21. single-click on the document File you want to burn
(see .dmg has been automatically added to the title)
22. click on Burn button
23. Disk Copy Progress status bar appears
(it is possible the disc may be automatically
ejected at this point, if so the Burn Disc window will say:
"Waiting for a disc to be inserted." Insert the disc.)
24. then Burn Disc window appears (should be expanded view ...if not, click on arrow in upper right corner)
25. see Allow additional burns ... this must be checked
see Verify burn ... should be checked
see Eject disc ... should be selected
26. click on Burn button (only shows on very first burn),
or Append button (shows on second or multiple burns)
27. allow time for processing to finish (time will vary)
28. when done, CD-R will automatically eject
29. Disk Copy dialog will say:
" "XXXXXXXXX" was successfully burned."
30. Quit the Disk Copy application.
Be aware... after multi-burn sessions, the next time you insert the CD-R you will find more than one CD icon on the Desktop. Each icon will represent one burn session.
If you burn a CD-R disc 10 times, in 10 different sessions, you will see 10 CD icons when the disc is inserted. Each icon will carry the Title of a Folder, and the burned document will be found inside that particular Folder.
SPECIAL NOTE: Since writing this article, I have purchased a new eMac with OS 10.3, Panther, installed. And, while doing early exploration I have disappointingly learned that Apple has changed the formatting so the MULTI-BURN scheme, as described above, no longer works. Fact of the matter is that Utilities, and then Disk Copy, is now found navigating the Applications folder (for Mac OS 9) and will launch Classic 9 when you double-click to open it. Perhaps, with more knowledge, I will uncover another path to MULTI-BURN for OS 10.3 users, but right now it looks like that opportunity is not available.
